Aging of the Lip happens to everyone. So it is very common for people to want to enhance the way their lips look. Why is this so important? The lips are one of the main objects that people look at when they assess the face. The eyes, nose and mouth are central to assessing beauty within the face. They are the 3 main regions of the face that play a part in how beautiful the face is considered. Within these regions, the iris, nasal tip, and central part of the lower lip dominant in this assessment. These are the objects that take on the most importance when a viewer assesses beauty within a face that they see. After these important objects, the rest of the shapes in the eyes, nose and mouth are judged and together the face is analyzed for beauty within each particular face. Enhancing the lips is a very easy way to beautify the face and the least complicated. However, when you look at some of the results that are displayed in the media, you may think otherwise. This is true. The reason for this is that our understanding of beauty is not well known. The Circles of Prominence sets forth a theory that makes major improvements in our understanding of facial beauty. This theory explains the beauty around the lip area and can help clinicians perform lip enhancement / Lip Injections / Lip Fillers. Lip Augmentation Treatment Specifics and why Dr. Young’s Approach is superior: So what are some of the things we should be thinking about when we augment the lips. Well, first of all the Lower lip is the center of attention. Take a look at any face and concentrate around the mouth and lip area. You will notice that most of the light hits the lower lip. This light is very important for the brain. The brain is markedly more aware of areas that are lighted on the face. This lighting in the lower lips that is normally more concentrated and stronger in the lower lips versus the upper lips makes the lower lip the most important part of the lip area and the mouth area. So when you augment the lips the lower lips should be augmented the most. Sometimes you see in the media, lips that are weird looking. You can’t point out what is wrong but when you see an oddly filled lip, you know it is odd. This conclusion is a process that is formed in our brains in the subconscious realm. It is hard for us to analyze why, but we know that is just doesn’t look right. Well, we’re going to tell you why. Most of the time, when doctors augment the lips, they usually put too much in the upper lips. When the upper lips gets to be closer in size to the lower lips, the balance in the lip area is destroyed. The upper lip really should be no more than 1/2 the size of the lower lips and at most 2/3 the size of the lower lip. When we say 1/2 we mean the height of the lips, how much of the lighted portion is showing, or how much the red part is showing. Also the upper lip should be about 1 iris width in width and 1/2 in height and then taper off to the sides gradually. The lower lip should be 1 iris width high and 3 iris widths wide. The puckering in the lower lip should be 3 iris widths wide. When we mention puckering, it is the highlight that is seen in the lower lips. Theoretically, the red part could be more than 3 iris widths wide, just as long as the puckering, and the light that bounces off is around 3 iris widths is the main goal. These are some of the main rules that I follow to achieve beautiful lips. You will see in our videos how we do this to a degree.
Augmenting the lips can dramatically raise the beauty in the face. Because it is one of the most minimally invasive things you can do, it is an easy way to markedly beautify the face. Because the lower lips importance in the face is just below the iris and around the same as the nasal tip, when you fill the lips it can exponentially improve your appearance.
What to Avoid with Lip Augmentation: One of the things to avoid are to keep the filling mostly within the 3 iris widths area in the lower lip and gradually taper the filling towards the commissure, or corners of the mouth. In the upper lip the width should be 1 iris width and then a gradual taper. What is occurring commonly out there, is that the whole upper and lower lips are equally augmented from corner to corner. This gives the common Trout pout appearance. You have to differentially augment mostly the central parts of the upper and lower lips to achieve beauty. When the lower lips are larger than 1 iris width high, and 3 iris width’s wide, they become interpreted as being too big and the beauty in the lips are decreased. The same goes for the lips being smaller than those dimensions. This is the same for the upper lips as well. Larger than 1/2 iris width high and 1 iris width wide, detracts from beauty. While the converse of having them smaller than these dimensions, beauty is also decreased as well.
There are many ways to achieve Lip Anesthesia when you do Lip injections. The two most common ways are topical anesthesia or regional blocks. Topical anesthesia is usually applied to the red portion of the lips. These topicals are typically a combination of Lidocaine, Bupivicaine, and Tetracaine using all or some of each three. With this technique, the sensation of the injections are blunted but still there. With many newer products that have local anesthesia in them, the discomfort progressively improves. If a person would like to feel no discomfort whatsoever, regional blocks are preferred. With the use of lidocaine with epinephrine, you can block the four nerves that provide sensation to the lips. There are many nuances that are involved with regional blocks so that the more experienced the person is with the application of local anesthetics the better the block becomes.
