More Specifics on Otoplasty Correction of the Prominent Protruding and Large Ear:
Prominent Protruding Large Ears can be a stressful thing for some. During the summer, many people want to wear their hair up or cut their hair short. When that happens, prominent ears tend to be more of an issue. You can have your ears pinned back and it can be done under very light sedation and you can avoid all the risks of traditional approaches where you are put completely out for this type of surgery. Otoplasty is the industry name for this ear surgery where you correct the appearance of your ears through plastic surgery. It is really important, in our opinion to go to someone that has experience getting the best results. This takes an aesthetic eye and takes someone that will take the time to get the best results for you. You don’t want someone to rush surgery just to get done. You want someone to take their time to get the best results. You can see our testimonial page for our otoplasty treatment here: Otoplasty Testimonial | Review Page.
In terms of results, you definitely don’t want over correction and get the flat appearance. This can be a less than optimal outcome. We also specialize in otoplasty revision and have recently written a chapter for this particular subject in a large publication that is coming out. The overcorrected ear can be very difficult to change and treat. That’s why doing it right the first time is really important. The surgery is done through an incision in the back of the ear. So scarring is not a big issue at all. Then to pin the ears back we weaken the base of the ear (Concha see below) to allow it to come closer to your head. Sometimes the prominent ear or protruding ear is due to a lack of bend of the anti helix. If this is the case, we will bend the antihelix using sutures that will bend the cartilage to get just the right bend and medialization (just the right bend to get the look you want). Below is a picture showing some of the ear landmarks:
