Hair transplantation takes hair from another part of your body and implants it in the area that is desired.
The most common way requires the removal of a strip of hair in the back of your scalp and using it to thicken the front of the hair. The strip is broken up into slivers which are broken into follicular units. The group of single hairs can range up to five hairs. Each of these units are inserted into different areas of your scalp to thicken and reconstruct your hair.
It takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months to grow. You will not want to do another grafting for another 6 months to year. This is in order to know what areas have hair and what areas don't to really know exactly where to graft and not. Below is a pictorial of a hair grafting session:
Below are the pictures before hair transplantation showing the areas that we are going to graft hair:

A week later you can see the areas that we have placed the grafts and the crusting redness present. Over the next 1-2 months these hairs may fall out but don't be worried. This is normal and it will take 3-6 months for the hairs to grow back:

Two Weeks later, the areas have improved in that there are no crusts nor significant redness. The hairs are present but they may start to fall out. Again, this is normal.

Four months later, you can see the hair has started to thicken up and you now are seeing more robust hair growth and the area is thickened and hiding the scalp much better:

Six months later, you hair should be well on its way to looking normal with minimal visable scarring, no crusts, nor significant redness:
